Mahama's SHS, a 'killer punch' for NPP in 2016

Let's examine properly what President Mahama said on his version of free SHS. He said, beginning from 2015, govt shall make SHS progressively free by absorbing the fees for Day Students at an annual total cost of 71m cedis. This is very different from Akufo-Addo's.

First of all, SHS tuition is free for all students, so whatever fees are paid by day students are also paid by boarders, as well. So why discriminate?

Secondly, Akufo-Addo's free SHS, estimated to cost 750m or so in the first year, included free boarding plus free meals for day students.

To me, what the President said was designed to achieve the very effect we are given it now, which is to create the deceptive impression that he is implementing Akufo-Addo's free SHS. You may bash him all you want, at the end of day, his cynical aim, he hopes, would have been achieved by blunting what could be, once again, a 'killer punch' for NPP in 2016. But, the two are not the same. At all!

Also lets note that this is a strategy to divert attention from discussions on the economy and the falling currency (cedi). In as much as we must set the records straight on the intention of the NPP to implement the policy, we must be swift in bringing back the debate to the current issues that continue to affect the Ghanaian people. We must quickly demand the total cost of the Mahama Policy and a roadmap and then move into other areas that continue to agitate the minds of the populace.

Kind regards.
