YED PROPOSES AN SMS SERVICE FOR VOTER
VERIFICATION
In preparation for the December general elections, the
Youth Economic Dialogue (YED) is proposing for the
adoption of an innovative method and a more efficient,
swift and accurate way to improve our voter register.
With the increasing numbers of mobile usage in Ghana (as
per the National Communications Authority report in
January indicates 88.6% penetration of Ghana’s estimated
population) and computer literacy, the YED is
recommending a Short Message Service (SMS) and an online
platform via the internet to verify their registration
status and polling stations.
By allowing individual voters to verify their
registration status with the use of mobile phones and
personal computers, the citizenry play an active role in
complimenting the traditional long queues of updating
the register. This also allows civil society and
political parties to monitor the accuracy and legitimacy
of the voter register.
The SMS service will be available on all networks and
would be accessible to all Ghanaians at anytime from
anywhere in the country to verify their registration
details, i.e. Name, electoral area and the serial number
of vote registered.
To this end, the Youth Economic Dialogue, in the coming
weeks, will engage the EC and other interest groups like
The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunication, to discuss the
way forward.
We of the YED have developed the platform and will be
willing to offer it at no cost to the state, as a way of
improving on our electoral system and ensuring a
peaceful election 2012.
