An insult (on Obama's visit to Ghana)

I FOLLOWED WITH uncommon interest President Obama's
visit to Ghana, and couldn't help but notice the
striking fact that, despite all his praise for Ghana's
fledgling democracy, Obama did not visit the monument to
the country's first president and father of African
democracy, Kwame Nkrumah.
Five years ago, I participated in a National Endowment
for the Humanities Summer Seminar for Teachers in Ghana.
Along with 24 of my colleagues from across the United
States, I spent six intense weeks touring Ghana studying
everything from its geography, history and economy to
its religions, schools, and music. (My seventh-grade
history curriculum included Africa and the ancient
empire of Ghana.)
But it was Nkrumah's story — his dream, his triumph, and
ultimately his failure — that captivated me then and
continues to both inspire and trouble me today.
