On presidential cemeteries
Oforiwa Ballard
It is so sad that President Mills died an untimely death.
However, to suggest burial on a site dedicated to a true
Ghanaian hero, a visionary who is universally recognized and
respected, is unfathomable.
We have a limited cadre of venerated historical leaders in
recent history. Nkrumah is a representation of the highest
caliber of leaders that Ghana is capable of producing. His
memorial should be solely focused on him. What the committee is
contemplating is sacrilegious.
I am not saying that President Atta Mills does not deserve a
nationally recognized burial place, he does. However, Dr.
Nkrumah’s memorial is not it.
However, upon further reflection, I think the suggestion was
based
on not fully appreciating the significance of Dr. Nkrumah’s
memorial.
The committee sees the memorial as burial grounds rather than
what it truly represents: a place honoring the father of our
nation.
This should not be a party politics issue. Setting a separate
site for the burial of presidents is a great idea: A national
presidential cemetery. This is a great opportunity to check off
a need that is long over due in Ghana.

Presidential burials and the
controversy
Commentary, Aug 5, Ghanadot - Burial grounds for
only presidents, a new royalty, one would ask? How
about presidential wives and presidential contenders and
theirs too? Then there are the Chief Justices, Speakers
of Parliament and the Elders of State. I am certain the
latter groups may want in on the act too, sooner
or later. ...

Milton Friedman's Centenary
Commentary, Aug 3, 2012
- Like many, if not most, people who became prominent as
opponents of the left, Professor Friedman began on the
left. Decades later, looking back at a statement of his
own from his early years, he said: "The most striking
feature of this statement is how thoroughly Keynesian it
is." . . .More
