EC election decisions should be respected

Nii Armah Kweifio-Okai

January 01, 2016

The Electoral commission has recently made two announcements in relation to the end of year elections

- To allow manual verification if biometric verification is impractical

See http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/politics/2016-Election-EC-approves-manual-verification-402724

And

- To retain the current voters register for this year’s election

See http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/EC-says-no-to-new-Voters-Register-404465

It is my view that both decisions are correct and proper and the EC must be congratulated for coming to those decisions in a timely manner.

I have held the view that the crux of fair elections is vigilance of political party polling assistants in verification and authentication of voters on Election Day. And with manual verification supplementing biometric verification, we would have a situation where authentic voters would not be unnecessarily disenfranchised

I have also expressed the view that a new voters’ register is beyond the means of Ghana in the current challenging economic circumstances and that improving on existing electoral registers is best practice in all established democracies. I am therefore on all fours with the EC on retaining the current register

The NPP is almost isolated in calling for a new voters register. After the EC’s decision on the electoral register, following an independent panel advice, the NPP would be better off calling a press conference and saying – we do not agree with the EC’s decision (and every sleeping person in Ghana would know of the NPP position by now), but it would be counterproductive to be seen to be spoiling for a fight outside the ballot box, pre- or post. If the NPP takes this position, it stands to help Ghana avoid unnecessary rancour the type we have seen in neighbouring countries in recent years.

Equally important, such posture would spare the NPP of resources in fighting against the current voters register and enable it concentrate on ensuring the existing register is sanitised and improved as well as concentrating on polling tasks and measures that would more peacefully result in valid expression of voters’ wishes at this years election.
