Commemorating international Youth day; Ghana Youth dialogue on Migration

As Part of activities to commemorate this year’s international youth day, the youth of Ghana will be gathering at the Accra international Conference Centre on Monday, 12th August 2013, to dialogue on the theme, “Harnessing the Innovative Capabilities of the Youth to Address the Challenges of Migration while Mitigating Associated Risks”.

The session, which is being organized by the Youth Economic Dialogue (YED) in collaboration with Radio XYZ and other partners, shall focus on addressing the many challenges young people face during migration and attempt to find lasting solutions to it. Youth are recognized as one of the most mobile social groups in the context of migration – they form about 30% of international migrants! Yet very little is known about the livelihood struggles and opportunities that migration presents for young migrants and other youth who are affected by migration.

There is no doubt that the rapid and alarming urbanization we are experiencing has adverse effects on our quest for development, and if not checked in the shortest possible time, this would definitely spell further problems, seeing that Ghana, as a country, is still far behind in terms of development, as compared to other countries in West Africa, North Africa, and in the southern parts of the continent.
Participants have been drawn from various youth groups, students’ bodies and Political Party’s as well as government agencies, international organization and embassies in Ghana.

Lead discussants include;
• Kojo Wilmot, LMIS Focal Point, International Organization for Migration
• Dennis Adjei Dwomoh, Legal Practitioner and Lecturer, GIMPA
• Michael Boampong, Migration and Development Expert
• Odelia Ofori, Development Journalist, TV3 Network

The 2-hour session, which will be live on Radio XYZ and streamed online, will be chaired by Hon. Dr. Mark Assibey Yeboah, MP for New Juaben South and will have Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu as Special Guest of Honour

Florence Nana Araba Donkoh
Communication & Fundraising Officer, YED
