Standard for private universities a must - Dr. Katsner

Accra, Aug. 30, Ghanadot/GNA – A lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School on Saturday asked private universities to ensure standards in order to produce graduates that would propel the country to a middle income status.

Dr Adelaide Katsner said this would require due diligence, evaluation and monitoring by the universities, bearing in mind the effects that substandard education could have on the country’s human resource.

She was speaking at the 42nd Graduation of the Ghana Christian University College (GCUC) under the theme: “The Role of Private Universities in Nation Building”.

In all 63 graduating students were awarded certificates, diploma and Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology, Leadership Skills and Conflict Management.

Dr Katsner asked the universities to put in place relevant structures that would ensure periodic curriculum review, staff and faculty development and enhancement of emoluments through income generation projects.

She stressed on the need for more private tertiary institutions to provide equal opportunities to the many eligible students who could not gain admission into public universities.

Mr Manuel Budu Adjei, President of the GCUC, said the College was committed to transforming communities by equipping Christian leaders to champion national development.

He said in pursuit of excellence, the GCUC had affiliated to the University of Wales in the United Kingdom, adding that the College also scored ‘outstanding’ in post validation and joint board of studies assessment.

He said the GCUC was poised to pursue higher and urged the graduates to apply the skills and virtue acquired to transform society.

The GCUC, formerly known as the Ghana Christian College and Seminary, was established in 1966 by a group of Ghanaian and Americans as a non-denominational tertiary institution.
