Lecturer advocates reading culture
among students
Accra, Sept. 24, Ghanadot/GNA –A lecturer at the University
of Ghana, on Wednesday, called for measures to improve the
reading habits of students in order to curtail the fallen
academic standards in the country.
Mr S. Nii Bekeo Tackie called on government to establish
more public libraries to provide access to reading
materials.
He made the call at a seminar organised by the American
Corner Library in Accra, to mark this year’s International
Literacy Day.
The day, which was meant to sensitise students on the
benefits of reading was on the theme:
“Reading Across
Continent, Connecting Students and Teachers Around the World
via Technology.”
Mr Tackie identified lack of reading as a major contributing
factor to poor academic standards.
He stated that every year, the Chief Examiners report of the
West Africa Examinations Council confirm that most students
failed their examinations as a result of grammatical errors
and poor expression in the English language.
He said it was therefore evident that students were not
reading wide enough to improve their expression in the
Queen’s language.
Mr Tackie therefore asked students to read wide, saying
reading should not only be for examination purposes but for
the acquisition of broad knowledge that would assist them in
all endeavours.
He said low teacher morale and bad teaching practices was
affecting effective teaching.
Mr Tackie called for teacher specialisation in reading
instead of making it the responsibility of English tutors.
He also asked parents to inculcate reading habits in their
children from infancy and to provide them with the conducive
atmosphere to encourage them to read.
