Government brings back Senior High Education to 3 years
By Masahudu Ankiilu Kunateh, Ghanadot

Accra, Aug 4, Ghanadot - The Government of Ghana after series of consultations, debates and conferences, has decided to alter the duration of Senior High School (SHS) education from four to three years, starting from this academic year (September 2009)

This follows Ghana’s Cabinet approval of the three-year SHS system.

The Minister of Education, Alex Tetteh-Enyo disclosed to some journalists in Accra, yesterday.

He however disclosed that the current SHS one and two students who started the four-year programme would be made to complete the four-year programme.

According to him, Cabinet has directed the Ministry of Education to work feverishly on the transition from four years back to three years, saying the “government will seek amendments to the Act that made SHS education four years.

Mr. Tetteh-Enyo was quick to add that the cabinet has also requested for an implementation plan to be submitted to it for onward transmission to parliament for consideration.

The Kufuor administration increased the number of years for secondary education from three to four, despite a three year proposal by the Anamoah Mensah committee.

Prof Anamoah Mensah was chairman of the educational reform committee constituted by the ex-President.

The NDC in opposition disagreed with the four years and pledged to revert to three if it won power.

In a bid to fulfill its campaign pledge, a forum was organised, to among other things, suggest the number of years feasible for the Senior High School Education in the country.
