Adopt new water and sanitation technology to solve related problems - Experts

Accra, June 20, GNA - A day's seminar on water and sanitation technology ended in Accra on Wednesday, with an urgent appeal to the construction industry to apply the latest and most efficient innovations to address the sanitation problems of the country.

The seminar, themed: "appropriate water and sanitation delivery technology" was attended by over 20 participants drawn from the Ghana Real Estates Developers Association, Building and Planning Contractor, Hoteliers, Architects and Engineers, among others.

The participants were of the firm conviction that considering the prevailing climate changes that impact on dwindling global water resources, environmental degradation and attendant sanitation problems, appropriate and efficient technologies should be applied for effective water and sanitation delivery to ommunities.

The seminar, which was held at the Ghana Institution of Engineers, was facilitated by Mr. Dieter Lienhard, global Marketing Executive of GEBERIT International, Swiss world leader in sanitary equipment and plumbing systems, which sponsored the event to introduce its latest technology in the sector.

Mr. Lienhard told the seminar that, "GEBERIT equipment are designed on the basis of state of the art technologies that make bad odour a thing of the past in our sanitary system and double flush system, electronic waste disposal systems and sanitary equipment for public toilets, among others.”

In an interview, Mr. Francis Sekyere, Managing Director of APLUTECH 200 Company Limited, sole agents of GEBERIT in Ghana and organizers of the seminar said his company is currently installing all the sanitary equipment and plumbing systems for next month's African Union Summit in Accra, relying exclusively on GEBERIT technology.

Mr. Sekyere said the operations of GEBERIT International in Ghana will impact positively on the economy through provision of water conservation equipment and the re-introduction of underground water tanks, to preserve water for domestic uses during periods of scarcity.

These, he emphasized, would also address the current prevailing deteriorating water and sanitation problems facing the country, particularly the capital and other major cities and urban areas.
"All over the world, water is increasingly becoming a scarce" resource and it is absolutely necessary to put in place measures that will mitigate the problem facing the people and guarantee such a valuable commodity in any crisis situation", Mr. Sekyere added.
