Accra, May 20, Ghanadot - A combined team of personnel from the Tema Regional Police Command, National Security, Customs, Excise & Preventive Service (CEPS), Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) and security department of the Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority (GPHA) has taken into custody  61 parcels of cocaine at the Tema Port.

The cocaine, weighing 71.45 kilogrammes arrived at the Tema port on board a vessel carrying chewing gum consignment from Equador.

The ‘goods’ which was stopped at the gate of the Gateway Services Limited (GSL) were packed like Bibles in two leather hand bags (black and blue) last Tuesday at about 2:00pm.

The street value of the ‘goods’ was not available at the time of filing this report.

The goods was concealed in a Maersk line container onboard a long articulator truck with registration number, GR 9241 A enroute into the country.

The agent, who is believed to be a staff of Seko Agency, the driver of the long vehicle and his mate are presently in police custody, however, the importer one Augustina Abu International is presently at large.

Later, two other were arrested at Dansoman and Amasaman.

Ghanadot sources at the port said that the National Security agents got wind of the goods arrival on board the vessel from Equador and laid ambush for it.

Our source said on arrival at the port last Wednesday at around 2:00pm, the goods were detected by the scan after which it was tested in the presence of team and proved that it was indeed cocaine.

The Tema Regional Crime Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Joshua Dogbeda confirmed the arrest but directed this reporter to talk to officials at the NACOB headquarters in Accra.
