Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in sordid state
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, March 4, Ghanadot - The centenary celebration of the birth of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s Founder, is coming soon, yet monuments and edifices built in his memory are in dire need of repairs and rehabilitation.

The Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum where his mortal remains lay is in sordid state as the structures have developed serious cracks, the water fountains haven’t seen water in several years, the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra is a sorry sight of hawkers, heavy traffic and miscreants.

Recently, the past Kufuor administration built a Hawkers Mall at Kwame Nkrumah Circle to ease the problem of hawkers who have taken over the place, but unfortunately, nothing has been done by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to ensure that the measure undertaken worked.

Authorities in charge of the Mausoleum have complained of total neglect much to the embarrassment of the memory of the nations Founder.

Mr Kweku Manu the Chief Administrator of the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum disclosed that during Ghana 50th anniversary, cosmetic measures of covering the cracks and paintings were done to hide the embarrassing state of affairs at the mausoleum.

Nothing, according to him, has been done since. Two days to the 52nd anniversary of Ghana, it is important for the mausoleum to be repaired, so that Ghanaians and tourists who would be flooding the country to witness the celebration send good message to their respective countries.

"What they did was to put a red carpet on top of the cracks to cover it. After the rains the water has been draining on the floor and sort of spoil the carpet… water supply to the place is horrible, the electrical systems are not very good in fact they have been there for a very long time since 1991 since they were installed, there has not been a change of wiring".

Mr. Kweku Manu added that with the coming into office of a new administration, he hopes that something will be done to improve the structural condition of the Mausoleum.
