EC announces April 7 for Jirapa by-elections
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, March 5, Ghanadot - The Electoral Commission has announced April 7, 2009 as the date for the by- election in the Jirapa Constituency of the Upper West Region.

The by-election follows the demise of the Member of Parliament for the area, Edward Kojo Salia. The NDC MP and onetime Transport and Communication Minister passed away some few weeks ago.

His death creates a vacuum in Parliament, meaning the Electoral Commission must organize a by-election within the next 21 days in the Jirapa Constituency to replace him.

It will be the very first by-election in the country since the NDC assumed political power. According to the EC, nominations for the bye election would be received on the 17th and 18th of this month.

Public Affairs Director of the Electoral Commission, Christian Owusu Parry told Citi FM that “nomination forms are available at the district office and then at the regional office in Wa so all who are interested, all qualified individuals who are interested may pick their forms from this time on and the get the people who are supposed to support and second and then fill the forms and submit the forms”.

Mr. Owusu Parry however noted that the filing fee had not changed and thus remained at GHC 500 the amount charged during the general elections in December last year.

He also noted that the Electoral Commission did not anticipate encountering any difficulty during the period of the by-election.

Some political observers have, however, noted that this first by-election will offer opportunity for the EC to further fine tune the electoral process in order to free it of some alleged improprieties.
