Asantehene bestow’s ‘awards on

Accra, April 27, Ghanadot - The 10th
anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II did not only bring the whole
nation together, but the occasion also brought the whole world
together in unity. The occasion was used to honour the bravery
and good governance of ex-presidents of selected African
countries and noble men of other countries in the world.
Former President Jerry John Rawlings of Ghana and Nigeria’s
former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, were among five persons
honoured on Sunday by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for
their role and contribution to the growth of democracy on the
continent.
According to the Asantehene, former president Rawlings has
helped Ghana significantly in the fight for a democratic rule.
He said Mr. Rawlings accepted a democratic rule for his people
because of the greater love he has towards the good people of
Ghana.
Asantehene said former president Rawlings
during his time as a leader maintained political stability, and
has as well maintained his reputation as an honest and rational
leader who did not use his position at that time for personal
enrichment.
Otumfuo disclosed that former president Rawlings also helped him
and the Ashanti people in diverse was when
he was in power and to that effect, the former president be
honoured for his role in attaining democracy for the people of
Ghana.
Asantehene did this when a grand durbar was organised at the
Baba Yara Sports Stadium to climax his 10 years as an Ashanti
king.
The others were former President Festus Gontebanye Mogae of
Botswana; Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, former President of Sierra-Leone
while former Prime Minister of Spain, Jose Maria Aznar, was
honoured for his enormous love and support for the African
continent.
The five personalities who were honoured, on Saturday took part
in an international symposium on the theme, Depending Democracy
in Africa held in Kumasi.Otumfuo decorated all five in rich
kente cloths, and presented them with citations on emerald
plaques (Agyiwodin Award) that extol their individual
personality and contributions to democracy in Africa.
