NPP family must stay united - Ex-prez Kufuor tells delegates
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, Aug 22, Ghanadot - The former president of the Republic of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged the 1,490 accredited delegates and the NPP family to stay united to enable the party win the 2012 general election.

Former President Kufuor said this at the ongoing Emergency National Delegates Conference of the party at the Trade Fair Centre in Accra, under the theme, “Reflect, Rebuild, Recapture 2012," the "R" convention.

The “R” Convention is the first delegate congress since the party lost power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2008 general elections, with the  purpose af amending the party’s constitution to to enable it to recapture power come 2012.

According to Mr. Kufuor, the amendment of the party’s constitution serves as a basis of bonding within the party and also to serve as a platform to renew commitment to the people.

To him, the meeting of delegates and NPP faithfuls is for a very fundamental assignment to amend some aspect of the party’s constitution, adding that “the power is there for our taking if only we put our house together for now on.”

Mr. Kufuor said the Danquah-Dombo tradition is one of tolerance and no fear for debate, thus delegates and the members of the party should put all that tolerance to work and allow the people to decide on which way to go.

He called on the “Elephant Family” to put their personal biases aside and ensure the exercise goes on smoothly. He urged all not to give room to ccomplacency or confusion but to leave the conference as one strong united family.

Former President Kufuor urged delegates to stay united and deliberate positively on the amendment of the party’s constitution so as to come out with decisive ideas to help the party recapture power from the NDC, since the world and indeed Ghana are looking at the outcome.

The Delegates conference which is currently ongoing in secrete will give delegates the chance to vote to make some 48 amendments to the  party’s constitution. The 1,490 accredited delegates of the NPP is expected expected to vote for or against these proposed amendments.

Key among the proposals circulated were, increasing the Electoral College and limiting the number of its flagbearer aspirants to three, and changes in the Constituency and regional organizations.

The constitutional amendments are the result of a postmortem exercise by the party after its defeat in the cliffhanger 2008 elections and others preceding that event.
