AMA spends GH¢500,000 a month to collect waste
Masahudu Ankiilu Kunateh, Ghanadot

Accra, Feb 16, Ghanadot - The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) spends five hundred thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢500,000) a month to collect about sixty thousand tones of waste which is generated in the capital, Accra during the period. This situation is made more difficult by the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the metropolis.

The Director of the Waste Management Department of the AMA, Ben Laryea, disclosed on GTV's Talking Point programme that some residents who refuse to pay for waste collection, have now adopted the method of dumping their refuse at unauthorized places.

Mr Laryea warned that it is against the AMA by-laws to burn refuse. He said the AMA is expecting a report which will recommend a suitable land fill site for the capital.

Dr. Edith Clarke of the Ghana Health Service described the burning of refuse as a worrying source of ill-health because of the emission of poisonous gases. She said the insanity situation in Accra is the cause of diarrhea, respiratory and malaria cases especially among children under five.

Dr. Clarke added that severe hospital admissions and death are also increasing.

Mrs. Isabella Gyewu Orhin, the Communications Manager of Zoomlion, a private waste management company also disclosed that centres of excellence are being established at the University of Ghana and KNUST to make the waste management system more effective. She explained that Zoomlion operates under environmental sanitation policy of 1988 which permits private companies to engage in waste management.

Mrs. Gyewu Arhin said awareness creation on environmental sanitation is high but this is yet to translate into behavioral change. She appealed for cooperation from the public to keep the cities and towns clean at all times.
