The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), has given a week ultimatum to the
authorities of the University for Development Studies (UDS) to re-open the Wa
campus of the university.
According to the union ‘if by March 2, 2009, we hear nothing, the students of
Ghana shall hit the streets and the authorities of UDS shall take full
responsibility for every action of the obviously and justifiably enraged
students’.
The President of the National Union of Ghana Students, Mr. Ishmael
Tweneboa-Kodua gave the ultimatum at a press conference flanked by the Central
President of the Students’ Representative Council of the Wa Campus of the UDS
and the Press and Information Secretary of NUGS, Mr. Malik Abass Daabu in Accra
, today.
Mr. Tweneboa-Kodua therefore called on all democratic forces to stand against
the inhuman and autocratic developments in UDS, saying justice cannot be
sacrificed to satisfy the whims and caprices of a single individual.
He called for an unconditional revocation of the letter suspending the two
students and all rights due them duly accorded.
They added that they had exhibited unparallel patience, maturity, restraint and
goodwill. The usurpation of the sovereignty of the students must stop now.
Also, the union would exercise its constitutional mandate to resist any attempt
by person or group of persons who sought to prevent students of UDS from freely
exercising their political will.
They alluded to Article 3 and 4 of the 1992 constitution which enjoins all to
defend it and resist any attempt to suspend it or part of it.
