Accra, Sept 17, Ghanadot - The
Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, Mrs. Betty Mould-Iddrissu
has received a prestigious award from the Ghana Institute of
Advanced Legal Studies at the Kwame Nkrumah University of
Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.
Mrs Mould-Iddrissu in a short statement after said receiving
the award for her "contribution to the legal profession in
Ghana" as well as her appointment as the first lady
Attorney-General in Ghana.
She vowed to lead the crusade to ensure that problems
confronting legal education in the country are tackled
head-on to ensure a sounder judicial system.
The A-G reiterated her ministry’s commitment to design a
strategy to solve the problem where qualified law students
are unable to gain admission to the Ghana School of Law to
pursue professional law courses.
According to her, "Since assuming office as Attorney
General, I have set myself the key objective of leading the
efforts at reforming legal education in Ghana. This has
become even more important given the peculiar challenges
confronting the only School of Law in Accra in terms of
extreme shortfalls in resources and facilities of the
school. As we near the completion of the first decade of the
21st Century, we cannot afford to be kept backward in any
aspect of our national life," Mrs. Mould-Iddrissu said.
She urged the faculties of law in the various institutions
to "re-evaluate and streamline their admission policies in a
manner responsive to the problems of facilities and quality
assurance at the Ghana Law School."
"Indeed, the problems confronting legal education transcend
the issue of numbers of students at the Law School.
"I have a global and holistic view of this and in the
medium-to-long-term, I intend to work closely with all
stakeholders including the Judiciary and General Legal
Council to devise effective and long-lasting solutions to
the problem. All options are on the table and I think we
should not also be averse to copying or learning from models
of other countries." she stressed.
