Is power struggling tearing NDC apart?

Accra, Sept 30, Ghanadot - The Ghanaian political party atmosphere is hot with what
political analysts call serious power struggle which is
likely to affect the electoral fortunes of the
NDC party in
2012.
Indeed, this week, the Ghanaian vibrant media landscape is
filled with bellicose quarrels, especially between two
leading members of the party.
The two members who are engaged in this political sacrilege are
Mr. Ato Ahwoi, a former Minister of Local Government and the
former Minister of Communications, Dr. Ekow Spio-Garbrah,
both in the J.J Rawlings regime.
As of yesterday, Mr. Ahwoi audaciously took Dr. Ekow
Spio-Garbrah to the cleaners.
He added that the former Communications Minister in the
previous NDC government under Jerry Rawlings, has been
making truculent arguments, posing as the most intelligent
member of the ruling party.
“I am telling Spio Gabrah that he is not the only
intelligent man in the world, Spio Garbrah is not the only
intelligent man in the NDC,” Mr Ahwoi
stated.
He was confirming a letter he wrote in response to
criticisms by Mr
Spio-Garbrah against President
Mills and his government in a number of articles published in the
state-owned Daily Graphic and other media houses including
this website, yesterday.
Mr Ahwoi said Dr Spio-Garbrah since 1993, had consistently
ridiculed President Mills and wondered why he (Spio-Garbrah)
thought the president would appoint him to serve in his
government.
He accused the former NDC presidential candidate aspirant of
being the brain behind scurrilous text messages before the
NDC’s presidential primaries; that
the then candidate Mills was
not medically fit to lead the party into the epic 2008
presidential elections.
“It was he Spio-Garbrah who started a rumour that President
Mills will die before the 2008 elections. He sent a text
message to President Rawlings,” raising those concerns, he
emphasized.
The heavyweight in the NDC described Dr Spio-Garbrah as an
‘unruly’ star player who needs to be dropped for the good of
the team. “When footballers cannot be controlled in the
dressing room, it is better to drop them,” he emphasized.
Mr Ahwoi believes the CEO of The Commonwealth
Telecommunications Organisation is egoistic and must not be
included in the president’s team.
He said team players make things work and “Spio-Garbrah is
not a team player,” advising that Dr Spio-Garbrah must learn
to be a team player if he wants to be considered for
appointment into the Mills’ government.
He however stated without equivocation, that if the
president sought his counsel, he would strongly advise
against giving Dr Spio-Grabrah any position in the
government – now or in the future.
When Dr Spio-Garbrah was reached for his reaction, he said
he had not received Mr Ahwoi’s letter and that he would
respond appropriately upon receipt of it.
Some NDC activists waded into this war and called on
Dr. Spio-Garbrah to keep his suggestions to himself, saying
“President Mills does not need your suggestions”.
