E/R Minister moves to end the nefarious activities of
Fulani Herdsmen

Farmers who live in the Eastern part of Ghana have always
remain in fear and this is as a result of the atrocities
that some fulani herdsmen in the area are being meted out to
them.
Some of the farmers got killed after their food crops had
been destroyed by cattles and they complain to the herdsmen.
At Kwahu Hwehwe in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern
Region, two men were reported dead over the weekend and
their crime was that they have complained to the fulani
herdsmen of how their cattles had destroyed their farms.
According to the report, the two people
were killed in the full glare of the residents of Hwehwe who
were helpless as they fear the Fulani Herdsmen who were
wielding guns suspected to be AK 47 rifle might attack them
as well. After the incident the attackers bolted away with
nobody arresting them.
Women also got raped by these herdsmen in their farms when
they meet them without company of men.
Successive government had therefore tried to find a lasting
solution to these problem but very little had been achieved.
From January 2005 to December 2008 for instance, the former
District Chief Executive for the Kwahu South District, Mr
Ownona Asante launched the operation cow leg programme to
put an end to the nefarious activities of these herdsmen.
With the operation cow leg programme, security personnel
were ordered to shoot and kill any cattle that destroys a
farm but at the end of it all very little was achieved.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Ofosu Ampofo has however
promised to end that menace and has since make some moves
towards achieving his set objective.
In his address at the second ordinary meeting in the Kwahu
South District, Hon Ofosu Ampofo has urged the assembly to
come out with a by-law to end the disturbing activities of
the herdsmen. He said, the by-law should make it compulsory
for the registration of all cattle owners in the district
and their cattles as well.
"We should know where the cattles are located and every
cattle should be given a number so that farmers can easily
identify them in case they destroy their crops and report
them to the appropriate authorities for action to be taken"
he advised.
He has therefore urged members of the assembly to expedite
action on passing the by-law.
