Accra, Feb 15, Ghanadot - The residence of ex-President
Rawlings at Ridge a suburb of Accra was this morning gutted
by fire and according to the aide of the former President,
Mr Kofi Adams, nothing was salvaged from the house.
According to report, the fire may have started around 4:00am
and at that time the former President was said to be out of
Accra. His wife and daughter Nana Yaa Asantewaa were
around but escaped unhurt.
The former President was reported to have travelled over the
weekend to Wume, near Sogakope in the Volta Region where he
was involved with an ongoing project to treat residents for
various eye ailments at the Sogakope Comboni Hospital. He
has since returned to Accra.
About five fire tenders were engaged in fighting the blaze
while scores of military and police personnel cordoned off
the area.
There are suggestions the fire might have been caused by the
erratic power supply which came as a result of heavy
downpour at dawn in the capital city.
Meanwhile, the General Secreatary of the opposition New
Patriotic Party (NPP) has described the fire incident as a
national disaster and has called on the government to
provide protection to the very important personalities in
the country to prevent future occurance.
