Declare your assets within 7 days, Prez Mills directed
Abdul Salam Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, Feb 24, Ghanadot - The President, Prof John Evans Atta Mills has directed all government appointees to immediately declare their assets in accordance with the assets declaration instrument.

In a statement issued by the presidency, henceforth, all appointees must declare their assets within 7 days of their appointment.

The statement added that receipts issued by the auditor general should be presented personally by the appointees to the president’s secretary for confirmation.

Presidential Spokesperson, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, however, said that the decision to cut the period officially allocated for assets declaration should not cause any controversy because Ministers were able to write out their CV’s in much shorter periods of time.

According to him, though the stipulated time frame was still six months, the President was of the opinion that a lot of things could happen within the six months and as such did not want to give anybody any opportunity in the intervening period.

Hon. Ayariga noted further that the requirements on the form did not require too much of ministers and as such noted that the task could be finished within the required time period.

He however noted the decision was “in keeping with the President’s commitment to ensure accountability by all public office holders appointed by him.”

The new directive now brings to rest the debate about public officials declaring their assets.

Many believe that the declaration will reduce corruption in the public sector and make government officials more accountable.
