CPP to hold family dialogue
By Awudu Salami Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, July 8, Ghanadot - The Convention People’s Party (CPP) is undoubtedly the oldest political party in Ghana’s contemporary democracy and its contributions can never be over looked.

But in terms of large support base and effective party structures at the various constituencies, the one time ruling Convention People’s Party is yet to find them and make the party more visible and formidable.

Manifold problems that confront the party have however been blamed on the root of disunity in the party.

Thus, the party had since the return of democracy to Ghana in the year 1992 been contesting elections in the country but to no avail.

The party’s National Chairman, Mr Ladi Nylander has however promised to change the status quo in the party and make it a more viable party capable of winning elections in the country.

He revealed in an interview that the CPP would very soon hold what he termed as family dialogue in Accra with the view of ironing the differences in the party and forge a united front towards the 2012 elections.

As part of the dialogue which is bringing key stakeholders, party functionaries and elders of the party together, it would rectify what went wrong during the 2008 elections and come out with new plans of action to make the party more visible and attractive for national elections.

Mr. Nylander said, the forum would provide opportunity for all who contested for party positions in national elections in 2007 and 2008 meet face to face.

He pointed out that the dialogue forms part of CPP’s 60th anniversary celebrations which had already seen the party organize nationwide programmes such as seminars, photo exhibition among others.

Some of the issues to be discussed at the party’s family dialogue will include sowing fruitful seeds to further the work of the constitutional committee, seeking better ways of revamping the party as well as raising funds for administrative purposes and political grass roots work.

“It is an opportunity to ensure everybody is brought on board and talk and establish the rules of engagements and procedure to contest the 2012 elections”, he explained.

He observed that the CPP was beginning to recognize that the Nkrumaist party must come together.

“We all believe in the tenets of Nkrumah and that is self-determination, social Justice and pan-Africanism. We believe more than ever to come together and become a more formidable party devoid of self-interest”, Mr Nylander assured.
