Audrey Micah

Accra, July 7, Ghanadot - Government has allocated GHC 25million to help deal with the flood situation in some parts of the country, especially in the Accra Metropolis.

The move is to ensure that all illegal structures along waterways are demolished and gutters desilted. It is also to provide sane and a safe environment for Ghanaians.

The Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw, announced this on GTV’s Talking Point in Accra.

According to Dr. Bissiw, monies were allocated to some contractors last year last year to construct gutters, but they failed to do so.

She reiterated that all such contractors will be brought to book. The deputy minister maintained that all illegal structures at flood-prone areas will be demolished to ensure free flow of water.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) boss, Dr. Alfred Vanderpuije, on his part said some illegal structures on waterways which pose danger to the lives of people have been identified.

He asked owners of buildings to seek permits from the AMA before building. Dr. Vanderpuije said the AMA will continue to work closely with other agencies to ensure that sanity prevails.
