Gov’t allocates GHC 25 million to combat floods in Ghana

Accra, July 7, Ghanadot -
Government has allocated GHC 25million to help deal with the
flood situation in some parts of the country, especially in
the Accra Metropolis.
The move is to ensure that all illegal structures along
waterways are demolished and gutters desilted. It is also to
provide sane and a safe
environment for Ghanaians.
The Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing,
Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw, announced this on GTV’s Talking
Point in Accra.
According to Dr. Bissiw, monies were allocated to some
contractors last year last year to construct gutters, but
they failed to do so.
She reiterated that all such contractors will be brought to
book. The deputy minister maintained that all illegal
structures at flood-prone areas will be demolished to ensure
free flow of water.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) boss, Dr. Alfred
Vanderpuije, on his part said some illegal structures on
waterways which pose danger to the lives of people have been
identified.
He asked owners of buildings to seek permits from the AMA
before building. Dr. Vanderpuije said the AMA will continue
to work closely with other agencies to ensure that sanity
prevails.

Accra, July 6, Ghanadot - The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR)
has shutdown again. According to the Chief Executive Officer
of TOR, Dr Kwame Ampofo, the shutdown became necessary at
the insistence of its engineers to enable them carry out
full maintenance works to ensure that the refinery operates
at full capacity.
