Government terminates appointment of NIA Boss
By Awudu Salami Sule, Ghanadot
Accra, July 17, Ghanadot - Prof.
Ken Attefuah, the Executive Secretary of the National
Identification Authority (NIA) will from Monday July 20,
2009 ceased to hold that position as government has
terminated his appointment.
No reasons have however been cited for his
firing.
Prof. Ken Attefuah has served as the Executive Secretary of
the National Identification Authority since July last year
when he replaced Prof. Ernest Dumor.
In his place will be Dr. William Ahadzie, who until his
appointment was the Acting Director, Centre for Social
Policy Studies, University of Ghana.
The nationwide mass registration exercise which started last
year is currently on hold after covering only four regions
in the country - the Central, Western, Eastern and the Volta
regions.
The next destination was supposed to be the Greater Accra
Region but the exercise has stalled as a result of
non-availability of money to pay workers and there is no
clear indication when it will resume.
Workers have been agitating over unpaid allowances and are
threatening to go back on the streets after an earlier one
in March, 2009.
Some of the workers who spoke to Ghanadot over the
termination of Ken Attefuah's appointment said, the
replacement of Prof Dumor by Ken Attefuah did not help
situation at the NIA. They intimated that, the major problem
that confront NIA workers is delay in the payment of their
allowances and the problem still exist.
The workers have therefore call on the incoming Executive
Secretary to come out with a policy which would enable them
have access to their allowance at the end of every month.
Dr. Ahadzie's also has an immediate responsibility of
ensuring an industrial harmony at the NIA and proceed with
the registration process as early as possible.
