Unity is essential for victory in 2012 - Kufuor
By Awudu Salami Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, July 31, Ghanadot - Former President John Agyekum Kuffour has urged the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain united for the party to wrestle power from the NDC in the 2012 general elections.

He also entreated the party to ensure transparency in the selection of candidates to lead the party.

"As we demand free and fair elections from the Electoral Commission let us do it right among our ranks so that when we pick our candidates, we will support them to win the 2012 elections", he said.

President Kufour who was addressing the Ferdinand Ayim Memorial Lecture in Accra yesterday said, it was only unity that would change the fortunes of the party by winning the 2012 elections.

"Let us keep away from the things that divide us and respect each other", he advised.

According to President Kufour, the NPP lost the 2008 general elections because it was divided and their votes got split.

He said Ghanaians needed the NPP back to power and therefore urged the party leadership to fight hard to bring the party back to power.

'The youth of the party must study the tradition of the party and work diligently for the party and avoid all sycophantic attitudes", ex-President Kufour advised the youth.

In a related development, the 2008 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has revealed that the flagbearership contest for election 2012 would not create any problems for the party.

Some political analysts say the relationship between Nana Addo and his closest contender at the last 2007 flagbearership race, Mr Alan Kyeremanteng was frosty and has the tendency to cause the disintegration of the party should the two of them contest the presidential candidacy of the party again.

But Nana Addo in an interview with the media refuted the suggesting, arguing that competition has always made the NPP better and competition between him and Alan could not divide the party.
