Fomena (Ash), Jan 2, GNA - The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Saturday set its campaign train in motion for the Fomena by-election slated for January 23 when it nominated Nana Abu Bonsra, 49, as the party's parliamentary candidate.

Nana Abu Bonsra holds a postgraduate diploma in architecture from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and is a Principal Partner at the Arckito Consult in Accra.

His nomination was by consensus after three other contestants stepped down.
The nomination was conducted before the party's national, regional and district executives led by Mr Peter Mac Manu, the National Chairman, Nana Ohene Ntow, the General Secretary and Mr Lord Commey, the National Organiser.

Officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) were also present.

Mr Atta Boafo, Mr Amoako Assiama and Mr Kwasi Annan Frimpong, the three other contestants said they had stepped down in the interest of the party and to facilitate the attainment of the objectives of the party.

Nana Ohene Ntow said the NPP upheld democratic principles and that because of the short period, "We all have agreed to avoid primaries."

Mr Yaw Amankwah, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Party, congratulated the Fomena constituency members of the party for the maturity they had displayed in the nomination of the candidate.

Mr Akwasi Nti Asamoah, the constituency chairman, said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had 2,009 votes in the last parliamentary elections and challenged the members to work very hard to redeem those votes.

Nana Abu Bonsra thanked the leadership of the party for the support they had given him.

Mr K.F. Asante, the most tipped candidate for the party who withdrew his candidature, donated 10 million cedis and Mr Akwasi Agyekum of T. Agyekum Construction Works gave 1,000 dollars towards the by-election campaign.
