NPP to set up Committee to investigate party's defeat at the December Polls
Abdul Salam Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, Jan 27, Ghanadot - The National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP), Mr. Peter Mac Manu has hinted that the New Patriotic Party would set up a committee to find out why the party lost the run off presidential elections which was held on December 28 last year.

Mr. Mac Manu who was addressing a Press conference at the party's headquarters today in Accra said, many reasons have been accounted for the defeat of the party in the just ended presidential and parliamentary elections and it is prudent for the party to set up a committee to investigate the cause of the party's defeat and provide lasting solutions to them.

According to him, though the Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo took the lead in the December 7th presidential polls, he failed to win the run off elections which he obtained 4,480,446 representing 49.77% and the Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, Prof John Evans Atta Mills polled 4,521,032 representing 50.23%. He explained that, the closeness of the presidential results called for an investigations, hence the committee to be set up by the NPP.

Mr. Mac Manu revealed that, the New Patriotic Party before the December polls were the majority in parliament but after the elections, the reduced their seat from 128 to 107 whilst the NDC increased from 94 to115. "All these called for an investigation and we are going to do a real postmortem of the December 2008 presidential and parliamentary polls", he stated.

He has therefore urged all party members who have something to say about the NPP's defeat to channel it through the committee to be set up by the party and which he said would start work on Wednesday 28th January this year at the National headquarters of the party in Accra.

Meanwhile, the former National chairman of the party, Mr Haruna Esseku has blamed the defeat of the party in the December elections on some of the regional and constituency executives of the party.

He said, funds sent from the National Secretariat of the party in Accra to the regions and constituencies, were misappropriated by some of the party's executive and therefore did not get to the footsoldiers of the party.

Akufo-Addo, still a democratic dancer

Commentary, Jan 25, Ghanadot - Of all the contradictions boiling in Nana Akufo-Addo, presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2008 general elections, none is more intriguing than his continued enrichment of the democratic process through his ability to play with idealism and pragmatism.
