Winneba (C/R), March 8, GNA - Mr. Solomon Kwashie
Abbam-Quaye, District Chief Executive for Awutu-Effutu-Senya,
has charged heads of second cycle institutions, National
Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), and the Ghana
Education Service (GES) Directorates in the area, to
constitute themselves into "Basic Education
Development-Oriented Group (BEDOG)” to enhance effective
advancement of basic education in the district.
He said the district urgently required a strong
collaborative force from the three important national organs
to correct bottlenecks that had impeded basic education
development in the area over the years.
Mr. Abbam-Quaye was addressing a group of selected students
and teachers from the six second cycle institutions in the
district, representatives of GES, and some elderly persons
who attended a special quiz competition organized by the
Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Directorate of the NCCE to
commemorate Ghana's 50th anniversary.
Mr. Abbam-Quaye expressed regret at the poor performance of
basic schools in the district in recent years, and called on
all stakeholders in the educational sector, especially
parents, guardians, assembly members, and teachers in the
district, to play their parts very well to ensure rapid
improvement in the education sector.
He charged the NCCE, the GES, and Heads of the six secondary
schools in the district to come together as early as
possible and work out a comprehensive strategic plan to
accelerate the development of basic education in the area.
He said that his administration was ready to provide them
with both financial and material resources to make such
plans work satisfactorily, adding that he would personally
support and make sure that the quiz competition is organized
at least, four times every year to enhance the academic
performance of students of both Senior and Junior Secondary
Schools throughout the district.
Mr Abbam-Quaye advised students of various Junior and Senior
Secondary Schools in the area to let hard work and serious
studies be their hallmark all the time to enable them to
achieve their academic, technical and vocational targets.
The DCE reminded people in the district of the serious harm
that lack of enough highly qualified academics and
technicians had caused to the socio-economic development of
the district over the years, and warned that failure of the
current generation to study hard to reverse the trend, might
spell the doom of the district.
Mr. Raymond E. Tsotome, NCCE District Director, expressed
his outfit's appreciation to the District Chief Executive
for the tireless efforts he was making to ensure that the
NCCE operates effectively and assured him of the NCCE's
preparedness to initiate more outreach programmes to
sensitise the people on government policies and programmes.
Mr. Tsotome also thanked authorities and teachers of the six
secondary schools, which participated in the contest for
accepting the invitation of the NCCE to ensure the success
of the competition.
Mrs Felicia Opokuah, Public Relations Officer/Guidance and
Counselling Co-ordinator of the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District
Directorate of the GES, who stood in for the District
Director Mrs Helina Arkoh, cautioned students against the
smoking of marijuana and the abuse of other hard drugs
because they have the potential of destroying their future
completely.
She appealed to parents and teachers to help inject a high
sense of discipline into the youth as a means of
safeguarding the future of the children and the nation.
