Five day refereeing course ends

Accra, Nov 17, GNA – A five-day Referee Instructors course aimed at exposing the instructors to modern trends of the game and new methodologies in teaching ended at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence, Prampram, Accra on Friday.

The course dubbed ‘Futuro III’, was participated by 12 instructors drawn from Ghana, Nigeria, the Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Equatorial Guinea participating in the programme.

The participants include three Ghanaians, two each from Gambia and Liberian and one each from Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.

Two veteran instructors, L.O. Laryea and A.P. Agbovi also participated in the five day course, even though they did not fall within the age category for the course.

The course was under the auspices of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) and the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA).

Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) acknowledged the contributions of the referees to the development of the sport, describing them as one of the four pillars of the game, hence the importance of the five-day course to the develop the sport in the continent.

He therefore called on the referees to ensure that they impart the knowledge acquired to the young and upcoming referees to minimize errors associated with refereeing adding that the course is therefore aimed at minimizing unpardonable mistakes of the game.

The GFA President said Association will soon come out with a comprehensive programme to further enhance the knowledge of referees in the country.

He however noted that the decision of FIFA to organize the programme in the country shows the growing confidence the international body has in Ghana due to the nation’s organizational abilities.

Mr Nyatakyi said such confidence is evident in the FIFA GOAL I and II projects in Ghana, adding that the FA intends solidifying such relationships in the future.

Mr Fernando Tresaco of the Refereeing Department, who was the Course Director, expressed satisfaction with the programme, describing it as more an interactive forum than merely teaching.

He was of the view that the participants will be able to effectively and efficiently use the new teaching techniques and methodologies as they go their bases to extend their knowledge to referees in their respective countries.

Mr Tresaco expressed the hope that the referees will able to improve on the level of officiating in their countries by ensuring uniform interpretations of the game, which is a major concern of FIFA.

At the end of the course, each participant was presented with certificate of participation.
