Prof Mills Third Time Lucky
By Gideon Sackitey, Accra
Accra, Dec.21, Ghanadot.com – Professor John Evans Atta
Mills, former Vice President of the National Democratic
Congress (NDC) regime of Jerry Rawlings has been elected
with a resounding margin of 81.4 per cent to represent the
party in the 2008 Presidential elections.
It is the third time that the national delegates have
elected Prof. Mills to lead the party. It also the third
time that the law and tax Professor, will be contesting
against a candidate selected by the New Patriotic Party (NPP),
the party of President John Kufuor.
Prof. Mill beat the field of four – Ekow Spio Gabrah, Chief
Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Telecommunication
Organization, Alhaji Mahama Idrissu, former Minister of
Defence and Mr Eddie Annan, a business mogul.
Prof Mills had 1,362 votes representing 81.4 per cent of the
1,700 votes of the delegates making him the best of the
three gentlemen to lead the NDC in the 2008 election.
Spio Gabrah Gabrah came second with 8.7 per cent and Alhaji
Mahama Idrissu with 8.2 per cent and Eddie Annan, with 1.7
per cent, all first timers contestants in that order.
The other three candidates promised to help Prof Mills
campaign to wrest power from the ruling NPP in December
2008.
Prof Mills himself described his victory as a victory for
five people: for Mills, Spio Gabrah, Edddie Annan and Alhaji
Mahama Idrissu indicating the decision to work together to
takeover power in 2008.
The NDC was carved out of the former Provisional National
Defence Council led by former President John Rawlings.
