Bye-law called for to prevent willful destruction of
trees in municipalities
Koforidua, Feb. 11, Ghanadot/GNA - Many
trees planted along major streets and open spaces in the
Koforidua Municipality have been destroyed by utility
service providers and other bodies, particularly developers,
officials have said.
Mr George Nathan Akyeampong, New Juaben Municipal Field
Supervisor for Tree planting told the Ghana News Agency (GNA)
in Koforidua on Monday that high volume of trees had been
destroyed at Asokore, as well as areas around Adweso Seventh
Day Adventist (SDA) schools and the Trinity Presbyterian
Church.
Mr Akyeampong called on the Municipal Assembly to enact a
bye-law that could be used to prosecute people who
will-fully destroy trees.
He cited utility services including the Electricity Company
of Ghana and Ghana Water Company as worst offenders, saying
they indiscriminately cut trees along their service routes
without permission.
Individuals and organizations allocated plots of land in
open spaces also cut down the trees indiscriminately in
order to begin construction.
