Decentralized primaries is crucial to national elections -
Ntow
Accra, Feb 17, Ghanadot/GNA- Nana Ohene
Ntow, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on
Sunday said decentralization of elections at the primary
level in the country ensured extensive participation of the
people.
He explained that even though at that stage, procedures only
concerned respective political parties, each respective
winner had the potential of becoming president of the entire
nation.
Nana Ntow was speaking at the Kotoka International Airport,
Accra, on arrival from the U.S, where he had been upon the
invitation of the U.S State Department to observe political
elections at the primaries level in that country.
Concerning the experiences he gained during the two-week
visit, Nana Ntow said in the US, electing candidates at the
primary level was as much a national as a party issue.
He noted that in U.S, the county or district absolutely
determined the procedures for the elections adding that the
Election Registration Authority only served as a guide
concerning primary elections in that country.
Nana Ntow noted that decentralization, so far as elections
at the primaries level was concerned, was so extensive that
it ensured a broad level of participation as possible.
The NPP General Secretary said he admired the ease with
which various supporters of different candidates displayed
placards of their respective candidates while still together
without any mis-understanding in the U.S.
Nana Ntow said it was a well accepted fact in that country
that every one had a right to support candidate of his or
her choice, adding that such understanding and unity was
worth emulating.
