New region
creation is a Constitutional issue - Asiedu-Nketia
Tamale, June 3, Ghanadot/GNA- The National Democratic
Congress (NDC) on Tuesday said the creation of a new region
out of an existing one was a Constitutional issue and that
no political party or an individual could do without what
the Constitution stipulated.
Mr Johnson Asiedu-Nketia, General Secretary of the NDC said
this when he and Mr John Dramani Mahama, running mate to
Professor John Evans Attah Mills, NDC flagbearer interacted
with the press in Tamale on Tuesday.
He said creating a region involves legal processes,
including a referendum in the existing region, “the issue of
creating a region must be justified and that it must also be
approved by Parliament”, he added.
Mr Asiedu-Nketia said the creation of a region must not be
politicised or used as a campaign tool, but rather critical
analysis should be adopted to ensure that the proper thing
was done.
He said it was therefore wrong for any party to create the
impression that if it won Election 2008, “it would create
this or that region”.
Mr Asiedu-Nketia said the North was endowed with resources
and with a little help it could grow into an agricultural
and industrial area.
He said "With the expansive fertile land for agriculture
production, and serving as a transit for imports and exports
of goods to and from Burkina-Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Niger and
others.
The General Secretary said the Tamale Airport could be
elevated to an international one and that constructing a
rail line from the South to the North was convincing and
practicable."
He said those were the things the NDC would focus on when it
wins power and that the Northern Regions' underdevelopment
would be a thing of the past.
"The NDC is committed to a fair and equitable development of
every region", he said.
