President Kufuor leaves for AU summit
Accra, June 28, Ghanadot/GNA -President John Agyekum Kufuor,
left Accra on Saturday for Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, where he
would attend the 11th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of
the African Union (AU), from June 30th to July 1st, 2008.
During the Summit, which is President Kufuor's last as
President of Ghana, he is expected to bid his colleagues
farewell.
A release signed by Mr. Andrew Awuni, Press Secretary to the
President and Presidential Spokesperson, said the Summit
would focus on "Meeting the Millennium Development Goals on
water and Sanitation", and would be preceded by the 19th
Summit of the Heads of State and Government Implementation
Committee on the African Peer Review Mechanism.
It said a number of countries, including Nigeria and Kenya
were billed to be peer-reviewed at the Summit, adding that,
Togo would also sign for future review.
Other items on the agenda are the issue of Union Government
for Africa and the global food and fuel crisis, the release
said.
The current electoral impasse in Zimbabwe is also likely to
take centre stage, it added.
President Kufuor is expected back home on Wednesday July 2.
At the airport to see off the President were Ministers of
State, government officials, as well as senior police and
military personnel.
