President Kufuor leaves for AU summit

Accra, June 28, Ghanadot/GNA -President John Agyekum Kufuor, left Accra on Saturday for Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, where he would attend the 11th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU), from June 30th to July 1st, 2008.

During the Summit, which is President Kufuor's last as President of Ghana, he is expected to bid his colleagues farewell.

A release signed by Mr. Andrew Awuni, Press Secretary to the President and Presidential Spokesperson, said the Summit would focus on "Meeting the Millennium Development Goals on water and Sanitation", and would be preceded by the 19th Summit of the Heads of State and Government Implementation Committee on the African Peer Review Mechanism.

It said a number of countries, including Nigeria and Kenya were billed to be peer-reviewed at the Summit, adding that, Togo would also sign for future review.
Other items on the agenda are the issue of Union Government for Africa and the global food and fuel crisis, the release said.

The current electoral impasse in Zimbabwe is also likely to take centre stage, it added.
President Kufuor is expected back home on Wednesday July 2.

At the airport to see off the President were Ministers of State, government officials, as well as senior police and military personnel.
