Cooperation needed among political parties

Accra, Sept. 17, Ghanadot/GNA - There is the need for more cooperation and less suspicion among political parties for true democratic growth, Nana Ohene Ntow, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, said on Sunday.

He said whilst multi-party democracy was typified by the formation of political parties based on differences or similarities in ideology, key players within these parties had to realise that the greater aim was to forge national unity and progress.

Nana Ntow said this on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport after leading a five-member Ghanaian delegation to the Netherlands where they attended a conference on collaboration between political parties of opposing views for democratic growth.

He said whilst every true democracy was characterised by differences in opinion and ideas, these differences had to be harmonised for the sake of national growth.

The NPP General Secretary said once this was well acknowledged, the full gains of democracy could be enjoyed by a nation.

He said from the Netherlands, the delegation continued to Brussels where they held discussions with the leadership of the European Union on ways in which the Union could help with the building of democracy in Ghana, which was noted as a model for democracy in Africa.

The delegation, which was away for three days, consisted of members of the New Patriotic Party, People's National Convention, National Democratic Congress and Convention People's Party.
