Halt sale of Ghana Telecom, "  NDC says
Kweku Asare, Accra

Accra, October 12, Ghanadot – The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) party has raised serious objection to government’s decision to go ahead with the divestiture of Ghana Telecom and Western Telesystems (WESTEL).

It is therefore demanding that government halts the divestiture process until a careful due diligence and evaluation of the two companies is done on their worth and value, arguing that” “the terms advertised so far will not be in the economic interest of the country,” Mr Harruna Idrissu, Member of Parliament for Tamale South told journalists in Accra.

Government has advertised its intentions in the dailies and international magazines to transfer over 66 per cent of the shares of Ghana Telecom to a strategic investor. It has therefore appointed a strategic investor to facilitate the divestiture process.
Mr Haruna Iddrisu said Ghana will benefit only about 500 million dollars from the sale of the two telecommunications entities and that the figure was “abysmally low.”
He said the NDC believes that the government could raise as much as 2 billion dollars and called on the authorities to move at putting the company on the Ghana Stock Exchange where ordinary Ghanaians would have the honour of owning part of their cherished company.
