A Ghanaian is the fifth terrorist
in failed 2005 bombing in the UK
Washington, November 9, Ghanadot
- A Ghanaian of no fixed address in the UK, Manfo Asiedu,
also known as Sumaila Abu Bakari, has pleaded guilty to
charges of participating in the failed July 21, 2005 terror
bomb in the UK.
The charge has left Ghanaian in the US wondering whether the
story was real.
Asiedu confessed to the British
authorities that he lost his nerve before the attack. But
some Ghanaians here in the US claim it was his head that he
lost first.
Asiedu has confessed to being the fifth bomber in the
attack. Four of his fellow conspirators had already
been jailed. He has admitted to conspiracy to cause
explosions in the UK.
As of this writing, the
earlier charge of conspiracy to murder has been dropped for
a lesser charge of conspiring to cause explosions for Manfo
Asiedu, at a hearing before trial judge Mr Justice
Calvert-Smith.
Asiedu admitted purchasing the hydrogen peroxide used in the
attempted bombings on July 21, 2005, but said he refused to
take part in the attacks on account of his nerves. He dumped
his bomb in a wooded area in Little Wormwood Scrubs, where
it was found two days later.
The failed terror attack took place on three London
underground trains at Shepherd's Bush station, Oval station,
Warren Street station and on a bus in Hackney Road.
The other four already convicted are Muktar Said Ibrahim,
Ramzi Mohammed, Yassin Omar and Hussain Osman and would be
serving a minimum of 40 years in prison.
The Ghanaian born Asiedu, or Sumaila Abu Bakari, would be
sentenced at Kingston crown court on November 19 this year.
He faces a maximum life sentence for the charge for
conspiracy to cause explosions in the UK.
