Slow
recovery rate of credit extended to farmers worry MOFA
Betiako (Ash), Dec.8, Ghanadot/GNA- Mr. Mahama Saibu,
Ahafo-Ano North District Director of the Ministry of Food
and Agriculture (MOFA) has bemoaned the slow recovery rate
of credit facilities given to farmers to improve their farms
in the district.
He said out of GH¢20,600 (¢206 million) disbursed to various
farmers in the district in 2006, only GH¢5000 (¢50,000) had
so far been recovered as at October, this year saying the
situation was depriving other farmers access to the
facility.
Mr. Saibu was speaking at the district’s celebration of the
23rd National Farmers Day at Kojo Betiako on Friday.
In all, 31 farmers were honoured with various prizes,
including Knapsack Sprayers, Ghetto blasters, Bicycles,
Wellington boots, wax prints, Key soaps, Cutlasses and
Certificates.
Mr. John Antoah Mensah, 56, from Kwaku Duakrom near Manfo
emerged the overall best farmer and took home a bicycle, a
piece of wax print, a pair of Wellington boots, Knapsack
sprayer, 5 Cutlasses, one wall clock and 4 bars of key soap.
Mr. Eric Agyemang Prempeh, District Chief Executive (DCE)
expressed concern about the current land tenure system in
the country, saying it was an obstacle to agriculture
development and appealed to chiefs to support the Land
Administration Policy aimed at resolving the problem.
