Ghana-Malaysia
Business Club launched
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot
Accra, Oct 1, Ghanadot - The High
Commissioner of Malaysia to Ghana, Dato’ Razinah Ghazali has
stated that promoting closer bilateral economic cooperation
between Ghana and Malaysia in trade, business and investment
will boost economic opportunities in the country.
She said this at the launch of the Ghana-Malaysia Business
Club (GMBC) at her residence in Accra yesterday.
Her Excellency Razinah Ghazali explained that the formation
of the GMBC is timely and opportune not only to Malaysians
businessmen, but Ghanaians as well.
She said many Malaysians are not aware of the business and
investment potentials that exist in Ghana, adding that, "we
would like Malaysians to view Ghana as Africa’s golden
gateway.”
According to her, with Ghana’s population of 22 million,
there is the need for the nation to expand its market by
having lot of trading activities across the border with West
African countries.
“As a founding member of ECOWAS, Ghana could serve as a
spring board for Malaysian goods and commodities to
penetrate into West African market of 250 million
consumers…we would like Ghanaians to take advantage of the
vast market through Malaysia.”
The High Commissioner noted that though trade between the
two countries is small, there has been steady increase in
recent years.
“Last year, total imports from Ghana stood at approximately
$1.5million while exports to Ghana was around $1.6 million,
Malaysia total imports was $1.2 million while exports stood
at $1.5 million.”
The absence of Malaysia trade representative in Ghana, to
her has made it difficult for the business entities to
source relevant information, thus the need for the formation
of GMBC to supplement the High Commission’s efforts to
educate and disseminate useful information to the public.
“I hope that members of the GMBC will not only have the
enthusiasm, determination and perseverance to strengthen
their business but also help promote and strengthen business
ties between Ghana and Malaysia through various activities
and programmes.”
Launching the GMBC, Hon. Ato Ahwoi from the Office of the
President, who represented his brother, Hon. Kwesi Ahwoi,
Minister of Food and Agriculture, said the formation of the
GMBC is a laudable idea which will help the nation’s economy
significantly.
He said the time has come for Ghana to challenge herself, by
exporting finished products to Malaysia and the rest of the
world, rather than the normal row material syndrome, adding
that “we must have only one thing in mind that by the year
2020, Ghana will be a middle income country.”
Mr. Ahwoi urged Ghanaians to have a positive attitude to
work, since that is the only way to develop a country.
H.E Dan Abodakpi, Ambassador designate to Malaysia, pledged
to ensure that Ghana is recognized in the minds of investors
and businessmen in Malaysia as investment destination in the
sub-region.
“It is my hope that with a platform now been in place, when
I assume my post as a High Commissioner to Malaysia will sue
this platform to create a greater collaboration between
Ghana and Malaysia.”
