Accra, Oct 7, Ghanadot - Currently, the Kwahu area in the
Eastern Region of Ghana can boast of three district and one
municipal assembly but the oldest of all is the Kwahu South
district which has its capital at Kwahu Mpreaso.
Located in the north-western part of the Eastern Region,
Kwahu South district shares common boundaries with Sekyere
East District to the north, Asante-Akim North Municipal and
Asante Akim South District to the West, Kwahu West District
to the East and Birim North, East Akim Municipal and
Fanteakwa District to the South.
The district has Hon Joseph Omari who is a seasoned
politician as its District Chief Executive (DCE). In an
exclusive interview with GHANADOT at his Kwahu Mpreaso
office, Hon Joseph Omari revealed some of the eye-catching
tourist sites in the area and his plans to develop them.
He revealed that, the location of the district on the hill
top of the Odeweanoma mountain which has nice scenery and
interesting features such as ancestral caves, walkways and
waterfalls is itself a tourist attraction.
He said, in an area called Amate, the place is enclosed by
rocks which has peculiar features such as human features
like that of Jesus Christ, a spotted tiger shape, Ghana's
Independence flag symbol, a figure of helicopter and a
figure of human head. "There is a cave that looks like
a self-contained flat with a bed and other wonderful natural
features", he added.
Hon Joseph Omari further disclosed that, there is a falls
called Oku water falls at Kwahu Bukuruwa and like a cave, it
provides shade in times of rainy or sunny season.
"We also have the Apaku crown mountain and the gaping rocks
of Kotoso. The Apaku crown mountain boasts of ancestral
caves, water sources, green valley and serene forest and it
is an ideal place for tourists.
The gaping rocks on the other hand shows a
rock formation of a gaping beast whose open mouth stretches
some three metres across", he explained.
The DCE said , the Afram lake which has its location at
Kwahu Adawso and links to the Volta lake is another tourist
sites in the district. An important fishing centre, there is
a pontoon on the lake which ferry people from Adawso to Ekye
Amanfrom in the Kwahu North District.
He also talked about the hang-paragliding festival which
takes place during Easter festivities on the Odweanoma
mountain at Kwahu Obomeng.
In addition to its numerous tourist potentials, Hon Omari
said, with the location of the district on the Odweanoma
mountain, it offers a cool climate to those from the
temperate regions.
He however conceded that, a lot needs to be done to develop
most of the tourist sites in the Kwahu South district. He
said, his administration has kick-started a programme which
would enable local and foreign investors to invest in the
tourist business in the area and this would ensure a rapid
socio-economic development of the entire district.
"One of the major aims of my administration is to make Kwahu
South District a hub for tourists and we in the district are
ever prepared to create the enabling environment for
investors to operate successfully in the tourist industry"
he assured.
