University of Ghana wins GUSA Athletics Championship

Accra, March 25, GNA - University of Ghana, Legon collected 13 Gold, 11 Silver and eight Bronze medals, to win the Second Annual Cowbell/Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Mini Athletics Championship which ended at Legon on Saturday.


Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Kumasi, came second with 10 Gold, 10 Silver and seven Bronze medals while University of Cape Coast (UCC) took the third position with 10 Gold, six Silver and 16 Bronze medals.


University College of Education Winneba (UEW) took the fourth position with two Gold, seven Silver and five bronze, while University for Development Studies (UDS) took the fifth position with a Silver and a Bronze.


University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa took the sixth position without a medal in the two-day event sponsored by the management of Promasidor Ghana Limited.


Mr Alloysius Denkabe, President of GUSA expressed appreciation to the athletes for the sportsmanship exhibited.


He said the competition was organized to select a formidable team to represent Ghana in the Federation of Universities Games scheduled for Bangkok, Thailand in August, this year.


Mr Denkabe called on the athletes to take their training serious to win laurels for themselves and the nation.


Mr Albert Tettey, Secretary General of Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) said the GOC had developed a talent-identification programme for the universities.


He said GOC had released about 63 million cedis to GUSA to enable them participate in the August Games.


Mr Tettey called on the athletes not to bury their potentials but train hard to realize their dreams.


Mr Kwabena Asamoah, Communications Director of Promasidor Ghana Limited, said the company would continue to support the universities in future.
