Abdul Salam Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, Feb 9, Ghanadot - Information reaching Ghanadot indicates that four football fans, all men, are reported dead at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi where they were rushed for medical attention on Sunday after collapsing during the titanic football clash between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts Oak.

Also the number of supporters who collapsed at the stadium and had to be rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi could not be counted.

A radio sports presenter who works at Nhyira fm in Kumasi, a station which belongs to the Multi Media Group of Companies was also alleged to have collapsed in the course of running commentary of the match.

The incident follows a defeat which the Kumasi base Asante Kotoko suffered at the hands of their arch rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak on Sunday February 8, 2009.Hearts won the ninth-week league game 2:1 at the Baba Yara Stadium after taking a two-goal lead.

Before the gruelling encounter, many were Kotoko supporters who hoped and thought their team could easily out perform Accra Hearts of Oak especially when the match was to be staged in Kumasi, their home grounds.

But Accra Hearts of Oak defied the odds and put up a good performance at the full glare of about 40,000 Kotoko supporters to defeat Kumasi Asante Kotoko 2-1 at their home grounds. A feat which Accra Hearts of Oak was able to achieve in the year 1999.

A member of the Red Cross team who confirmed the incident to Ghanadot explained that, the supporters collapsed out of shock. He said, they never thought Asante Kotoko could loose the match considering their current form in the premiere legue and also playing in their home soil at the Babayara Stadium.
