EBOLA VACCINE
WAHALA
N. B. Andrews
June 12, 2015
The wahala/confusion surrounding the clinical
trial of the Ebola vaccine in Ghana is
troubling.
Frankly, it is embarrassing.
At the very least it is a public relations
disaster; once again our country has been placed
in an unfavorable light.
First, the professionals involved have not done
the necessary homework that is required before
commencing the trial.
The Ghanaian population does not know exactly
what is to be injected. How many of them can
spell vaccine?
Is it the full Ebola virus itself, or a weakened
form or a chemical component of the virus that
by itself cannot lead to an Ebola infection?
They need to be told in clear, simple and
accurate language.
The possible effects of the vaccine need to be
explained- everything, the good, the bad and the
ugly; and they need to know what precautions
are in place.
People are genuinely afraid of the Ebola virus
infection and they certainly do not trust our
public officials and professionals.....they have
failed them too often without any remorse or
recompense-there is no need to give examples.
Second, why is it that the professionals
involved in the trial did not first talk about
it and discuss it openly with the general public
even at the planning stage?
The manner in which the trial was revealed to
the public has led to suspicion and panic.
Therefore, we now find our professionals
defending their actions instead of leading the
discussion in a constructive manner and taking
cognisance of the feedback.
Please, doctor means teacher!
Even at this stage, brusque remarks from
qualified professionals are not helpful; they
leave the utterers looking undignified, inhumane
and well, incompetent- no matter their grandiose
academic credentials and titles.
With respect to our august national leaders,
some of us (their poor wards) decided a long
time ago like the child in the Hans Anderson
story- "The Emperor's New Clothes".
We have come to expect nothing but the banal
from them.
Finally, our local media practitioners; well,
the calibre of their reporting continues to be
uniformly mediocre and uneducative.
Sensationalism, the half-truth and the political
wink and nudge continue to be their forte.
If they detest this characterization of their
output (not work), then why have they not asked
the necessary questions and provided the answers
to our long suffering people?
Currently, is it not possible for us to do
anything properly in this country? Is not
possible, even just once?
Maybe, all the actors on this issue need to take
a deep breath, exhale and start speaking and
acting properly for once....and I mean all of
them, we are watching.
They need to chill for our country deserves
better.

Brother Andrews, as you have eloquently stated,
there is a need for education to ensure that if this
is really what it is meant to be that we give it our
full support. But without the proper education and
enlightenment, we will miss an opportunity either to
protect ourselves from future outbreaks of this
Ebola disease with the vaccines, or open ourselves
for further disastrous outcomes relating to the same
vaccines....
