Ghana to suffer power supply interruption for six months
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, April 28, Ghanadot - The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disclosed to Ghanadot that Ghana will suffer interrupted power supply for the next two to six months.

According to ECG, this is so because of the unavailable upgraded facilities and equipment at its various plant locations all over the nation, adding that the capacity required to produce the needed electricity to power the nation has thus been affected negatively as a result of the absence of the equipment.

This came some days after the Energy Minister. Dr. Oteng Agyei revealed to Ghanaians that the 2006/2007 days of load shedding were crawling back.

Dr. Oteng Agyei said government has secured over US$169 million under the Ghana Energy Development and Access Project to improve distribution of electricity across the country.

An additional $350 million loan facility, he said had been secured from the US Exim Bank for the extension of electricity to over 1,000 rural communities throughout the country.

But the Managing Director of ECG, Mr Jude Adu Amankwah said the 7-8% annual energy growth rate in the country meant that Ghana had to double its capacity of electricity production to meet the demand every 10 years, adding that this demand was not being met in pace with the energy growth rate in Ghana.

Mr. Adu Amankwa noted that the supply networks across the country were constantly overloaded and explained that the monitoring systems automatically turned off the electricity supply to prevent damage to the equipment. To him, the needed upgrades in the equipment at the stations could rectify the problem.

The ECG boss commended some donor agencies who had come to help the company and called for more aids to help the country maintain quality energy supply to its people.
