Nkrumah’s 100 years to be celebrated in Style
Audrey Micah. Ghanadot
Accra, Jan 27, Ghanadot -This year marks the centenary
anniversary of the birth of Ghana’s first president, and a
rejuvenate Kwame Nkrumah Foundation has unveiled plans to
celebrate the life of the continents most important and well
respected leader.
Speaking to the current president of the Kwame Nkrumah
Foundation, Professor Agyeman Badu Akosah, it was revealed
that one of the ideals of Dr. Nkrumah was the creation of
equal opportunities for all Ghanaians to achieve their
potential.
Dr. Nkrumah he said believed that ultimately the government
must be judged by how well it promotes and secures the
welfare of the people.
He noted that though the Foundation established in1984 has
been dormant for sometime, a new era of progressive activism
has been injected into the Foundation to promote the ideals
of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
According to Professor Akosah, the challenges faced by the
country have made Nkrumaism still relevant since the ideals
that Nkrumah championed were yet to be achieved.
The president of the Kwame Nkrumah Foundation reiterated
that the fact that 40 per cent of Ghanaian children are
stunted by chronic malnutrition means Dr. Nkrumah’s dream
has not been fulfilled, adding that “so long as Ghanaian
children do not go to school to achieve their God-given
talents, the dream is unfulfilled.
Outlining some of the activities to commemorate the 100th
anniversary of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s birth today at the
British Council, Professor Badu Akosah “we will commemorate
all the significant milestones of his life including 24th
February ; Independence Day, 6th March; 27th April, the day
he died; May Day, Solidarity with workers, farmers and
fishermen; 1st July, Republic Day; 1st August, the day of
the bomb attack at Kulungugu, which eventually marked the
beginning of his battle with cancer that killed him”.
Professor Badu Akosah disclosed that the foundation would as
well institute a three-day Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Lecture to
be held in September, preceding his date of birth, adding
that the foundation would also propose to President Mills to
honour Osagyefo by making September 21, Founder’s Day as
Holiday, just as Americans deem it fit to make Martin Luther
King’s birthday, a holiday.
In December, according to Professor Akosah, there would be
reflections on the life of Nkrumah during which people who
lived, worked, ate with him will tell their story. He said
the foundation is also going to establish Osagyefo clubs in
all the districts to educate Ghanaians on his vision and
ideals.
