Prof appeals to
government to support teaching of mathematics
Ho, Sept 6, Ghanadot/GNA - Professor Kaku Sagary Nokoe,
Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University for Development
Studies, Tamale, has appealed to the government to address
the issue of mathematicians and their training requirements.
He said the nation could not boost of enough mathematicians
in tertiary institutions.
Prof Nokoe said this when he delivered an address at the
33rd annual workshop and conference of the Mathematical
Association of Ghana on the theme "Fifty years of
mathematics education in the post -independence Ghana: The
challenges and the way foreword "at the Ho Polytechnic on
Tuesday.
He said there was the need to have sustainable graduate
programmes in mathematics and that the government should put
in place sufficient mechanisms to address the shortage of
mathematicians in basic schools.
Mr. G.K. Abiw-Abaidoo, Chairman of The Mathematical
Association of Ghana, said the association had contributed
to the teaching and learning of mathematics and had produced
mathematics textbooks for senior and junior secondary
schools.
He said there was a need to establish mathematics
laboratories and resource centres manned by experienced
teachers in all regional capitals where mathematics teachers
could avail themselves of the use of current teaching and
learning materials.
Mr. Abiw-Abaidoo appealed to the Ministry of Education,
Science and Sports to sponsor mathematics workshops in the
districts to enable mathematics teachers to be abreast with
the new trends in the teaching of the subject.
Mrs. Olivia Sosu, Volta Regional Director of the GES who
chaired the function called on the association to help
remove the phobia surrounding the studying of the subject
and rather make it "easy and friendly" to those they teach.
