President Kufuor leaves Accra on
Wednesday for Addis-Ababa
Accra, Oct. 2, Ghanadot - President John Agyekum
Kufuor leaves for Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia on Wednesday for a
three-day meeting.
The visit comes in the wake of
the unprovoked attack on AU peace keepers in the Darfur
region of Sudan. Ten soldiers are reported dead, many
hurt and an untold number missing. Forty has been
seized and are being held captive by the rebels.
While in Addis-Ababa, President
Kufuor will hold a high level consultations with the African
Union (AU) Commission on matters concerning the
organization, including the recent attacks suffered by
African peacekeepers.
Mr Andrew Awuni, Press Secretary
to the President and Presidential Spokesman, has issued a
statement which said that "while in Addis Ababa, President
Kufuor would hold discussions with Ethiopian President Meles
Zenawi and also meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is
leading a German parliamentary group on a visit to the AU
Headquarters."
Chancellor Merkel, apparently, is in Addis-Ababa to meet
with AU officials. At the last summit of
industrialized nations held in Heiligendamm, Chancellor
Merkel, currently the G-8 President, pledged her commitment
to debt relief programs and raising development aid funds
for Africa.
The President is expected back home on October 5, the
statement said.
