Brazil offers to help Ghana out of its energy crisis

Abuja Nov. 30, GNA – Brazil has offered to help Ghana out of its current energy crisis by sending down a thermal electricity generating plant to the country.

The Brazilian Energy Minister would, therefore, be visiting Ghana within the next couple of days to hammer out the technical details with the Ghana’s Energy Ministry officials.

Ghana requires about 2,000 megawatts of electricity but its present total generation mix comes up to 1,200 megawatts.

The offer from Brazil followed a request made by President John Agyekum Kufuor to the Brazilian President, Mr Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, during bilateral talks between the two leaders on the sidelines of the Africa-South America Heads of State Summit held in the Nigerian Capital, Abuja.

Forty-Seven African countries and 11 countries from South America participated in the meeting, which aimed at finding a common ground for greater cooperation between the two regions in the fast moving world of globalisation.

President da Silva informed President Kufuor of his decision to visit Ghana for the official launch of the EMBRAPA, the renowned Brazilian Agricultural Research Institute’s Africa’s Regional Office in Accra.

President Kufuor said Ghana was grateful to Brazil for the assistance.
He described President da Silva as “someone who comes across as a genuine and sincere Leader, who has extended a hand of genuine support to Africa”.

President Kufuor noted that Ghana could benefit from that country’s experience in the development of alternative energy sources.
Brazil is into bio-diesel and through cooperation and Ghana could gain a lot, as the nation seeks to double its energy supply.

He suggested the establishment of direct international air link between the two countries to help to boost their trade relations.
